Ayrshire Friendship Week a Success

“One of the best IPA events we have ever attended” that was the overwhelming comments from those who recently attend the Ayrshire Branch Friendship Week in Scotland. They came from Gibraltar, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, England, USA, Germany, Austria and of course Scotland to sample Service through Friendship the Scottish way.

A full programme of tours and entertainment saw the group sample a taste of Scotland at its very best well, apart from the weather. The event was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen’s Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran John Duncan QPM accompanied by the Regional Chairman Ronnie Dukes and Inspector John Conway who represented Strathclyde Police.

Opening Ceremony

Welcomed in by the skirl of the pipes the branch chairman welcomed everyone to Ayrshire and after the unveiling the commemorative plaque by the Lord Lieutenant it was down to the business of having a great week.

Music was the theme for the entertainment with brilliant performances from Andy Philip on his accordion, Willie Stewart singing Traditional Scottish songs and David Johnstone performing the `Address to the Haggis`

The Dunaskin and Doon Brass band all twenty seven of them took the roof off in an amazing performance which saw a ten minute standing ovation being accorded and last but not least the New Day singers who brought the event to it's conclusion in their more relaxed presentation.

Of course there was the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh which was spectacular to say the least but alas on what turned out be the wettest night in the Tattoo’s history it slightly dampened the evening.

The group were also treated to a mini cruise to the Island of Arran, a tour of Ayrshire, a visit to one of Glasgow’s largest shopping centres and a visit through to the amazing Falkirk Wheel a piece of Engineering that’s sees a wheel revolve a 50 foot long barge 90 feet into the air to connect two different canals.

In an week where there are too many highlights to mention a few that do stick out were, the march of the kilts in which many of the guests had actually hired full highland dress for the gala dinner and were piped in to the delight of their partners and other guests, the hotel staff dancing along with the members from America to Frank Sinatra’ New York, New York and one artist emphasising that it was our good friends the Irish who invented the toilet seat but going on to say that it was a Scotsman who put the hole in it.

As for the staff at the Menzies Hotel in Irvine you can only say they were excellent and when they too were presented to the visitors they also received a standing ovation.

The drivers from Stagecoach especially Margaret who won the hearts of everyone with her comment that she felt `one of us` are also to be congratulated for their professionalism

All in all a great week mind you there were guests at the Hotel from the Thursday to the following Tuesday so for some just a wee bit more than a Friendship Week.

What made it work so well, that is easy, a dedicated team of members and their partners from the Ayrshire branch who ensured that the motto `Service though Friendship` was prominent throughout.

As another visitor stated, “This team went above and beyond the call of Service through Friendship”
